Freezing and Fatigued in February

I'm getting tired of this long, unusually frigid winter! Most of our plants are dormant (or dead, thanks to the recent "arctic blast"), and it's too cold to spend much time outside. In the summer I might spend 10-15 hours per week in the garden, now it's more like 1. This isn't very conducive to garden blogging!
I take a lot of bird photos from inside. The ability to do this must be the one upside to having old, single-paned windows!

A lot of the reason I wanted a fish pond was to attract birds. However, we discovered the rock edging is thick enough to cause them a hard time when they try to take a drink. Scott suggested building them an island, and to my delight, they use it! This little bird hopped on the island for a drink right after I took this photo. The island is just a thick rock set atop bricks.

A few of my seeds are up 5 days after planting. If I only I could remember what they are!
Crocosmia (above) and mums (below) are enthusiastically coming back.
Despite the fact that they tear up my plants and eat my bulbs, I can't help but think squirrels are kind of cute! I thought this was an odd place to stop and enjoy a snack, but c'est la vie!

Have a great week!

UPDATE 8:45 PM: OMG AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH SAINTS JUST WON THE SUPERBOWL!!!!!!! WHO DAT?!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GEAUX SAINTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My mums are also getting a little enthusiastic. They don't know what's in store for them come August... :P

Great game!!! woowhoooooooooooooooo
I know what you mean about the icky cold weather-- time for it to go away.
Glad the little birds have found a way to get to the water without falling in!

Glad to see the saints win!

I'm definitely ready for some sunshine. I walked around in my yard this afternoon. Absolutely nothing is going on out there.

I like the pics of the bird and squirrel.

Good idea about the island for the birds! I am so ready for some warmer weather. Hopefully we won't have to wait too much longer.

That squirrel is a trip, hanging out upside down. I know exactly what you mean about this winter weather and it not being conducive to garden blogging. With a commitment to blog every day, I'm scrambling for topics by this point in the dormant season... sigh.

I have a crocosmia question that you might be able to help me with. I've wanted to grow them for a while, but we're going to be moving in the fall. I've confirmed that they will grow in large containers, so I can take them with us when we go. What I really would like to know is, does each bulb produce a single flower? Or multiple?

Who Dat They Won. It's time for the Saints to be on top. I am so ready too for the cold air to be gone. Bring on warmer and sunnier days. It is good to see that little bit of green in the seed trays.

Sounds like you're having the winter we had last year.
Cute picture of the bird at your pond. I did the same thing with a rock on some bricks so they could get a little drink.
Hope it warms up soon!

Ginger, You have a wide array of great photos! You're getting into Spring already. Have fun! :-)

Thank you all for the nice comments!

Meredith,
I don’t know whether each corm only has the capacity to produce a single flower stalk. My crocosmia has never flowered all that well… I usually throw a whole bunch of corms in a big hole, get a lot of pretty foliage and one or two flower stalks. Flower issue aside, I don’t think crocosmias look right spaced out. But to each his own!

Ginger, is this the world's longest winter or what?? Only a Saints victory makes it sweet! :-) Love that little bird pic. I wonder what it is??

Jean,
I cannot believe how cold it still is. So many of my more tender plants have died. Oh well!

Not a clue about the bird, and I've been trying to figure it out. I was hoping someone would say "cute xyz!" Ha.
