Y'all know I have all kinds of problems with
squirrels. I always heard that red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper would keep them away, so I sprinkled red pepper flakes around some
Peruvian daffodil and gladiolus bulbs I planted recently (the red straw is to remind me where things are planted! Recycled from
McAlisters!):
Guess what? IT TOTALLY WORKS! In the picture below you can see the same area as above, with some glads about 3 inches tall coming up.
The
Peruvian daffodils are also up and pretty much undisturbed!
For what it's worth, I imagine the flakes work better than cayenne because they are bigger and will last longer.

I've used red peppers for years and they work great!
Good to know something that has been rumored about actually works!
Burns those little noses!!! They don't like it. I am glad to see you are going green by recyling...LOL!
Sheila - I'm glad to hear the squirrels don't acclimate to it!
Susie - red pepper flakes for deterring squirrels and white soap in the wrapper for deterring deer are about the only two folk remedies that have really worked for me! I'm weary of trying things if it means I have to buy something, but when I already have the materials in the cabinet, why not?!
Dirt Princess - I am a recycling maniac! We have more recycling and compost than trash! LOL
Wow, this is impressive! I wonder if it works for gophers? If so, you will have made a lot of people happy...
Pomona,
It very well could work for gophers. Of course, it's easy to target the squirrels because I know what they are prone to get into - pretty much every bulb except muscari and daffodils!
Thanks for visting my blog!
